Project details

The conservation of 2 & 4 Sam Leong Road involved the restoration of two pre-war shophouses, addressing structural and aesthetic challenges caused by MRT tunneling-related ground settlement. This project preserved the buildings’ heritage character while ensuring their structural integrity and safety.

Scope of Work

Foundation & Structural Works

  • As the church building was originally constructed in 1930, asbestos ceiling materials were identified and safely removed by a specialist removal contractor.
  • Execution of new bored piling works to provide structural support for the higher rear extension block.
  • Implementation of comprehensive structural upgrades to convert the pre-war single-storey building into a modern six-storey structure.

Conservation & Exterior Enhancements

  • Restoration of all existing timber façade windows and doors in accordance with the original architectural design, including pilaster mouldings, concrete corbels, and decorative cornices.
  • Refurbishment of the front façade and interlocking tiled roof to maintain the building’s historic character and design integrity.
  • Through voluntary conservation of the front building façade, the church retained its existing front land without the need for additional road reserve setback.

Interior Finishing

  • Installation of high-quality floor and wall tiling to create functional, durable, and visually appealing interior environments.

Interior Modifications

  • Introduction of iconic gallery seating within the main worship hall to enhance seating capacity and improve community engagement.
  • Application of acoustic ceiling systems and wall linings to optimize sound quality and overall worship hall experience.
